A couple weeks ago, I was watching the movie “The Greatest Showman” with my daughter. Unlike her, it was my first time seeing it. As a certain scene was unfolding, I saw something that I think many people miss. And I explained what the dad, portrayed by Hugh Jackman in the movie, completely missed it.
The scene after we see him losing his job, he comes home to a house where the roof is leaking. He goes up on the roof and finds his wife playing and having fun with his two daughters.
It was in that moment that I pointed out what he had missed. His wife and kids didn’t care about the house, that it leaked. Or that they had to dry their clothes on the lines. They made the best of what they had. And they were loved and were proud of him.
But he didn’t see that. He saw what he didn’t have. Which I understand is a great motivator. At the same time, he was missing out on what they saw. Their needs had been met. They had food, clothing, a safe home, a loving environment, and they had him.
Don’t allow the material possessions of this world to blind you from the meaningful treasures God has placed right before you.
